Cataract Surgery Q & A

Your eyes have lenses that bend light rays and allow you to see. A normal lens is clear, but when you develop a cataract, the lens becomes clouded, so it’s like you’re looking through fog.

What are cataracts?

What are the symptoms of a cataract?

A cataract can lead to blurred vision. You may also experience:

  • Double vision
  • Extreme sensitivity to light
  • Problems with night vision
  • Muted colors or yellowed vision

When the symptoms of cataracts become unbearable and aren’t correctable with prescription glasses or brighter lighting, you might consider cataract surgery. Dr. Rubinchik and the team at Smart Eye Care can help you determine if surgery is the right step for you.

Who is a candidate for cataract surgery?

What does traditional cataract surgery entail?

You’re awake for the procedure, but your eye is numbed and the staff offers medication to help you relax. Dr. Rubinchik enters the eye thru a small incision made with a diamond blade. Through this incision, he gently inserts instruments to access the cataract and remove the clouded lens. He then replaces the clouded lens with a clear artificial one. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you go home the day of the surgery.

Dr. Rubinchik offers bladeless cataract surgery to viable candidates. He performs the surgery using a special LenSx®️ femtosecond laser. It dissects the clouded lens so it can be removed from the eye and allows for the correction of mild astigmatism with the right type of lens replacement. Options include the advanced technology intraocular lens implants, or ATIOL implants, which correct astigmatism and your vision enough that you don’t need glasses.

What are advanced cataract surgery procedures available?

What are ATIOL implants?

With standard cataract surgery, you receive the implantation of a clear, artificial lens to replace your clouded lens. This lens usually provides good correction for intermediate and distance vision, but you’ll likely still need reading glasses for near vision.

Advanced Technology IOL implants offer you the option to correct your vision almost completely, so you can see items close up and far away. In most cases, you can read the print on the back of a credit card with ATIOL implants.
