Over the years, we’ve heard a lot about our eyes and eye glasses, and we wonder whether some of the information we’ve received is true. When it concerns your eye health, it’s necessary to be well-informed so as to take the best care of your eyes and to be able to tell a myth from the actual fact. Here are some of the misconceptions about eye glasses and the eyes, and the truth about the matter.

1. Reading in the Dark will damage your eyes

We’ve heard this over and over. Reading in low light can give you a headache and cause eye fatigue, but it won’t permanently damage your eyes.

2. If you use glasses, then your vision must be terrible

While this may be true for some, it doesn’t apply to everyone. Some people’s prescription are so slight that you wouldn’t notice a difference if you try their glasses on.

3. Using your eyes too much will wear them out

Funny myth indeed. Just like using your nose to perceive smell and hearing with your ears, using your eyes to see wouldn’t wear them out. Your eyes are for seeing.

4. Eating lots of carrots will make you not need glasses

While it is true that carrots are rich in Vitamin A which nourishes the eye and helps in preventing diseases like cataracts, carrots can’t fix refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

5. Wearing eye glasses would weaken your eyes and make you dependent on them

That’s not true. Glasses are optical aids for people who have refractive errors, to enable them see better. If you feel you need to wear your glasses more often, your eyes are just getting used to your improved vision.

6. You don’t need to have your eyes examined by a doctor, unless you’re having an eye problem

False! There are many silent enemies of your sight like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, which can be discovered during a routine eye exam. It’s important to have an eye exam at least once every year.

7. You don’t look good in glasses. They’ll make you look nerdy

That’s absolutely not true. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of eye glasses that can add class and sophistication to your look. Sometimes it’s your choice of glasses that makes the difference.

8. Having 20/20 vision means that your eyes are perfect

The term ‘20/20’ means that your central vision is excellent, however, other aspects of your vision like peripheral vision and colour vision may be poor. some diseases like glaucoma can severely damage your peripheral vision over time, while your central vision remains intact.

9. Wearing someone’s prescription glasses would damage your eyes

If you wear someone’s glasses, your eyes would feel fatigued, you might have a headache too and feel dizzy because you’re not looking through the proper prescription, but it wouldn’t damage your eyes.

10. Sunglasses protect your eyes best from the sun

That sunglasses are dark does not mean that they’ll protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. UV-blocking agents block harmful rays of the sun, so even a clear prescription glasses with a UV-blocking agent can protect your eyes adequately. When buying sunglasses, be sure they have proper UV-protection, not just a dark shading.
